Yoga, Dogs, and the Heart Connection

People who love yoga, love dogs ~ or maybe it’s that people who love dogs, love yoga! 🧘🏼♀️🐾
Either way, there’s something magical about the overlap.
About 90% of my private yoga clients have dogs. I arrived at a client’s home on Sunday and was greeted not just by her smile, but by a "YOU BETTER LIKE DOGS!” welcome mat ~ with three happy pups wagging their tails beside her. This is often how my sessions begin: with joy, fur, and unconditional love at the door.
As someone who has always shared my life with animals, both cats and dogs. I know firsthand how deeply they attune to our energy. They sense when we’re calm, grounded, and centered… and when we’re not. That’s one reason why yoga and pets make such a natural pair.
Here’s what I’ve discovered about the beautiful bond between yoga lovers and dog lovers:
💜 Shared values: Both yoga and our beloved animals remind us to live with love, compassion, and joy for the simple things ~ a breath, a stretch, a sunny spot on the floor.
💜 Emotional connection: Dogs (and cats too!) mirror our energy. When we slow down, breathe deeply, and move with intention, they often soften right along with us.
💜 Physical activity: Sometimes dogs want to “help” with downward dog or join in for a stretch. It’s all part of the fun! Their playful curiosity keeps us smiling and present.
💜 Relaxation: The combination of your calm breath, gentle movement, and the quiet presence of a furry companion can be profoundly soothing.
Whether your pet curls up next to the mat, sits in meditation beside you, or decides your bolster is their new bed, yoga with animals brings a deeper sense of connection to our practice and to life itself.
So tell me ~ do you practice with your pets? What is that like for you?
