Stillness Among Trees – A Spring Reset for the Soul

Inspired by Wendell Berry’s poem “I Go Among Trees”

I go among trees and sit still. All my stirring becomes quiet…

In the constant rush of modern life — especially as women over 40 caring for families, careers, and communities — finding time to be still can feel almost impossible.

But Wendell Berry reminds us that we don’t have to force our way to peace. Sometimes, it’s as simple as going among trees... and sitting still.

The Healing Power of Stillness

Spring is a perfect time to step outside and let your nervous system reset in nature. Just 10–15 minutes sitting in quiet among trees — or even tending to a backyard or balcony plant — has measurable benefits:

  • Calms the mind and reduces cortisol (the stress hormone)
  • Supports bone health by lowering inflammation
  • Increases energy and immune function
  • Helps us feel connected — to the earth, to ourselves, and to what matters

In yoga, we often think of movement — but true transformation also comes in stillness. In savasana. In meditation. In those pauses when the breath leads, not the mind.

Practice This Week:

  • Go among trees. Literally. Find a park, garden, or even a single favorite tree.
  • Sit still. Take 5–10 minutes without your phone. Just notice your breath.
  • Let your “stirring” become quiet. No forcing. Just allow.

This isn’t laziness — it’s wisdom.
It’s resetting your nervous system and awakening your deep vitality.
